STEM Results Profile of the Day: Girlstart

Through its comprehensive programming, Girlstart provides a year-round, intensive suite of STEM education programs for K-12 girls. Girlstart’s core programs foster STEM skills development, an understanding of the importance of STEM as a way to solve the world’s major problems, as well as an interest in STEM electives, majors, and careers. Girlstart's core programs include: Girlstart After School; Girlstart Summer Camp; Girls in STEM Conference; and Community STEM Programming. Through these four programs, Girlstart reached nearly 14,500 girls, teachers, and parents in 2011, and 30,000 girls and 5,500 teachers and families to date.

91% of Girlstart After School participants demonstrated that they understand elements of critical thinking necessary for mastery of the scientific method, while 94% of participants demonstrated an awareness that success in STEM in high school or college is likely to broaden their career options. 92% of Girlstart Summer Camp participants demonstrate acumen in conducting scientific investigations and reasoning (using the scientific method and the engineering design process effectively), and 82% of participants feel that STEM careers are more interesting to them after attending Girlstart Summer Camp.
