The School for Science and Math at Vanderbilt (SSMV) is the result of a partnership between Vanderbilt Medical Center and the Metro Nashville Public School System. Qualified students apply in their last year of middle school, and if they are accepted, they attend the school one day a week for the rest of high school.
SSMV emphasizes giving the students hands-on experience; almost every week has the students performing some sort of experiment, ranging from dissecting cow brains to inserting genes into bacterium. During the summer, students take on larger projects, such as doing field work at local state parks. As the students get older, they take on more ambitious projects and contests; two students from the school recieved 3rd place in the 2011 Siemens We Can Change the World competition. In addition, seniors intern with a Vanderbilt University professor doing research, and by the end of the year publish it in their own journal, Young Scientist.
