The Mathematics of History
Today's TED talk by Jean-Baptiste Michel entitled "The Mathematics of History," gives a look at what can be accomplished when you use mathematical concepts to analyze the humanities. By taking large amounts of data, which are being made available by new technologies such as scanning books, today's researchers can begin to answer questions that were previously only examined from a historical, philosophical, linguistic, literary, or artistic viewpoint. New patterns and relationships can be discovered through quantitative analyses, thanks to these new technologies that allow data to be shared over large distances.
